SOUTH PASADENA'S DISINGENUOUS ARGUMENTS

The following chart visually depicts how South Pasadena has extracted mitigation for the proposed project and turned around and claimed that such mitigation is a basis to not build the freeway:

South Pasadena's Disingenuous Arguments

Mitigation To Respond To The Demand
South Pasadena's Current Argument

Innumerable large and small delays over a period of decades

New studies, mitigations, alternatives driving up the cost with every year of delay

The project has now grown too expensive

Ban long-distance trucks on this freeway segment

Long distance trucks banned

Why build an interstate freeway segment that bans trucks? Aren't trucks the reason for interstate commerce freeways?

Eliminate the exchange with I-110 because it would take away too many houses.

I-110 Interchange scrubbed

Why build this segment if it doesn't even connect with the 110 Freeway?

Put the freeway below grade to minimize noise.

85% of the freeway designed below grade at greatly added expense

The project is now too expensive.

Put as much of the freeway as possible into cut-and-cover "tunnels" so we can replace the community over the freeway.

25% of the segment designed into cut-and-cover "tunnels".

Cut-and-cover "tunnels" will be dangerous in earthquakes and will create noise and vibration in the houses over the "tunnels".

Monument to South Pasadena’s "solidarity" with El Sereno

For years South Pasadena lobbied to have the 710 constructed in El Sereno instead of South Pasadena. In those days South Pasadena pitted its interests against those of El Sereno. When the final route was drawn through both South Pasadena and El Sereno, the City of South Pasadena suddenly cast itself as the loyal comrade of El Sereno. This photo tells otherwise. This is a barricade erected by South Pasadena at the base of Via Del Rey to keep El Sereno traffic from entering their city. Some friend!
