ACCIDENTS AND FATALITY RATES

Accidents occur at a significantly lower rate and tend to be less severe on freeways than those occurring on urban streets. Modeling of the Environmental Impact Statement showed a reduction of seven deaths and 610 accidents per year once the freeway is completed. The modeling work of the Multi-Mode, Low- Build study estimated that completing the 710 Freeway will reduce the average annual number of vehicle accidents by 301 accidents per year. Accident deaths vary dramatically from freeway to non-freeway facilities. According to Caltrans statistics, there are 2.84 traffic deaths per 100 million miles traveled on non-freeways. On freeways the death rate is .79 deaths per 100 million miles traveled. The average number of traffic deaths on surface streets in the area impacted by the freeway gap is about 15 per year. Thus, the more cars shifted to the 710 Freeway, the lower the death rate for the region.
